Hi everyone, here are the local history photos & vintage newspaper of the week.

First up, a reminder for those local history and music fans out there!

The unveiling of the Duane Eddy historic marker, located on the edge of Riverfront/Centennial Park in Corning is tomorrow, Saturday, September 19, 2025 at 2:00 p.m.

Here is a digital version of the flyer, please feel free to share it:

And now, on to our photos of the week!

Local History Photo 1: First Street, Corning, N.Y.

Local History Photo 2: M. B. Super-Market

I’m sharing this photo, as it is a neat photo, and the photo may have been taken in Corning, but I have yet to track down where “M B Super-Market” was located. So if you know where M. B. Super-Market was located, let us know!

Local History Photo 3: Old Y. M. C. A. Corning, N.Y.

Our third photo for this week shows the old Y. M. C. A.

Location: 51 East Market Street corner of Cedar & Market, according to the 1901 Corning City directory.

And as related bonus item, here is copy of the map of the City of Corning found in the back of the 1901 city directory:

Hi everyone, here are the local history photos & vintage newspaper of the week.

Local History Photo 1: The Kennedy Hotel, Corning, N.Y.

The Kennedy House, also known as The Kennedy Hotel, was, according to the 1893 City of Corning directory, located at 23 East Erie Avenue (Denison Parkway) in Corning. The photo is undated, however, according to the Uri Mulford book Pioneer Days and Later Times in Corning and Vicinity, 1789-1920 the hotel was sold in 1893, so we know the photo was taken no later than 1893.

Local History Photo 2: The Old State Arsenal (AKA The Castle), Corning, N.Y.

This photo of the old arsenal is undated; however, in doing some research I was able to find in the the Irvin Near book A History of Steuben County and Its People, Vol 1 (1911) that the building, which was located on West First Street in Corning and used for storing military supplies, was sold to the Catholic Church in 1873. So it would seem likely that the photo was taken before 1874.
