Hi everyone, and welcome to our weekly local history post!
Each week we share vintage newspaper articles from years past, drawn from local publications such as the Corning Blossburg Advocate, Corning Independent, The Corning Journal, The Evening Leader, and other local newspapers. We also feature the complete issue of The Corning Leader published exactly 100 years ago. From time to time, we’ll also include newly taken photographs of local historic places, landmarks, and artifacts.

Vintage Article(s) of the Week
Earlier this week I was talking to another local history fan and she was telling me that she was enjoying reading the Ian Mackenzie book on history of local schools* and that she remembered both attending a local one-room school as a kid; and when the modern unified school district – the Corning Painted Post School District was established.
To be more specific there was plan voted upon in 1954 that joined 60 separate school districts of the Greater Corning and Painted Post area, many of which included one-room school houses, with the Corning City School District No. 9 to create the Corning Painted Post School District.
And I was inspired by the conversation to look for articles in the Corning Leader, on microfilm, that offered information on the vote – which passed on June 22, 1954 but by only 45 votes!
And here are two of them!
500 Jam Armory As Vote On School Plan Starts, June 22, 1954 | The Corning Leader, Corning, N.Y.

Enlarged City School District Proposal Approved By Voters Of Area 1,943 – 1,898, June 23, 1954 | The Corning Leader, Corning, N.Y.

*The Ian Mackenzie book has a long and encompassing title which is: The Birth of Education In One-Room Country Schools: The Story of all the one-room and other schools in the Corning Painted Post Area School District, New York, from 1793 to 1957 – you can check it out at the library.
