The Eightieth Anniversary of D Day

Today, June 6, 2024, is the eightieth anniversary of D Day; the day in 1944, when allied troops from The United States, Great Britain and Canada invaded Nazi occupied France, beginning the liberation of Europe and bringing the world closer to the end of World War II.

In remembrance of this momentous day and those who served during the invasion of France, here is a short blog post showing the breaking news of the day via two editions of The Leader, an extra edition and the daily edition.

Special Local History Program At Library Tomorrow: Disasters in Steuben County History with Kirk House

Hi everyone, just a quick FYI posting!

We’ll be hosting a super cool local history program at the library, tomorrow, Thursday, June 6, 2024 at 1:00 p.m.

The program is Disasters in Steuben County History with Kirk House

Here is the description of the program, taken from the library’s website:

Epidemics…floods…a bus crash… railroad wrecks…The Year Without a Summer.

What are the worst disasters that ever befell Steuben County?

Kirk House presents an illustrated talk on Steuben disasters, including which disasters took the highest death tolls, and why they did so. We’ll look at the Spanish flu, COVID, the Civil War, the 1912 rail disaster in Gibson, and the 1972 Hurricane Agnes flood, among others.

Kirk House, director of Steuben County Historical Society and former Curtiss Museum director, has spent almost 30 years digging into the history of our region. He has published over a dozen books, writes for local periodicals including the Leader, and makes frequent presentations. He lives in Bath with his wife of 49 years, he collects vintage comic books, and he hikes on the Finger Lakes Trail.

Registration is not required – join us!

Local History Photo 1: The Kennedy Hotel, Corning, N.Y. (c. 1890)

According to the 1893 City of Corning Directory, the Kennedy Hotel was located on Erie Avenue, the street today known as Denison Parkway.

–

Local History Photo 2: The German Church, Corning, N.Y. (c. 1900)

The 1903 City of Corning Directory tells us that the “German Church” was actually called “German Evangelical Lutheran Church.” In 1903 the congregation was holding services in the former Episcopal Church located on the corner of Erie Avenue (Denison Parkway) and Walnut Street.

Local History Photo 3: Greig Dry Goods Store, Corning, N.Y. (c. late 1800s)

According to the 1901 City of Corning Directory, The Grieg Dry Goods Store was located on the block 21 – 23 East Market Street.

The dry good store is long gone; but the building is still there!

From The Corning City Directories

While doing local history research earlier today, I came across two neat entries and thought I’d share them.

In fact, I have a feeling that information from the city directories in the library’s collection will be of interest to local history & genealogy fans out there – so I’m going to add a new section to this weekly blog post featuring at least one photo of an item found in one of our city directories. And in the future, I’ll make sure I don’t take a photo of my fingers while I’m doing so!

For this week though, we have two photos:

1. Our first City Directory Photo is from the 1931 City of Corning Directory and features a sketch and description of Corning’s “Newest Hotel.” The hotel, being the Baron Steuben Hotel which, although not currently used as a hotel, still stands on Market Street in Corning.

2. Our second City Directory item for this week is a brief & cool history of Corning found on page 9 of the 1936 City of Corning Directory.
