Local History Photos & Newspaper: February 7, 2025

Hi everyone, here are the Local History Photos of the Week!

Local History & Newspaper blog posts are published on Fridays; and the next post will be up on February 14, 2025 (Happy Valentine’s Day in advance!)

All three of our postcards for this week show the old Wing & Bostwick Store.

And I thought it would be fund to take a photo of the listing for the store in the city directory (1905) and include that bit if info to show where the store was located. So here it is!

Local History Photo 2: Notions Department of the Wing & Bostwick Department Store (interior view #1)

A Glimpse of Local Life: A Hundred Years Ago!

Here is an entire issue of The Evening Leader, Corning, N.Y. published on this day in 1925.

Library Local History/Creation Station Resources:
At the library you can scan your photos and slides to create digital family albums and slideshows; and even use one of the Circut machines, and other Creation Station equipment, to help you create a special paper family history album.

Also of note, we have local papers including the Corning Leader, Corning Evening Leader, Corning Journal and Corning Daily Journal, on microfilm from 1840 to the present — so you can visit the library and research local history and your family tree if you wish!

  1. Linda,

You are doing a wonderful job on this. Thank you.

Question: I’m trying to forward this to John Illig at johnillig26@gmail.com, and when I do, no pictures appear. He would like to get a subscription to this newsletter, but it seems problematic. I don’t know why because I received the subscription from my first cousin, Karen Schillberger (Orr) a few years back. I think she forwarded it to me.

Keep doing what you are doing. I liked you sending us CFA, East, West, Painted Post yearbooks in particular. But whatever cool ideas you come up with is fine with me.

    Thanks,

Steve Frey (Born and raised in Corning, NY)

If for some reason it doesn’t go through, please let me know.
