Hi everyone, here are the Local History Photos of the week!

Photo 1: Small Old House

This photo is of a small old house that was located in the Corning area at one time. Just where the house was and if whether or not it is still standing — that is a mystery! If you recognize where the house was/is — let us know!

Photo 2: More Small Old Houses

And here’s a second photo of two old houses located somewhere in our area – but again — where the houses were located is a mystery. Let us know if you can solve it!

Photo 3: Unusual Watch 

This is a photo of an unusual watch. And I don’t know a thing about the history of railroad time pieces – but I’m wondering if this might be a watch once carried by a railroad conductor? If you recognize what this time piece was used for – let us know!

Hi everyone, here are the Local History Photos of the week!

Photo 1: New Baron Steuben Hotel 

The caption on this photo, which is seen in faded writing at the top of the photo, says “New Baron Steuben Hotel, Corning, N.Y.”

Photo 2: Greek Revival Home

Our second photo for the week is of a Greek Revival building. And the building looks familiar but I can’t quite recall where I’ve seen it! If you know where the home is located let us know!

Photo 3: Parade 

And our final photo for this week looks like it might be of an old Colonial Days Parade. However, I can’t quite tell from the black and white photo if those are truly native American braves riding the horses or simply persons dressed up in native clothing. Perhaps someone with eagle eyes can take a look and see. And if you know anything about the parade of the men riding the horses let us know!

Hi everyone, here are the Local History Photos of the week!

Photo 1: Little Girl Hoop Rolling

Our first photo shows a precious little girl with her rolling hoop and stick. The clothes look like they might be Victorian in vintage.

Where the photo was taken and who the little girl may have been remains a mystery…

Photo 2: Smiling Young Woman 

Our second photo for this week features a smiling young women wearing a fancy gown and tiara.

Whether the lady in fancy clothes was queen of a parade, going to a party or perhaps getting married remains a mystery…

Photo 3: Building on One of the Lakes:

Our final photo for this week seems to have been taken from a boat. The picture shows a building, with a nearby smokestack seen in the background. So perhaps this building was a business located on one of the Finger Lakes…

Hi everyone, here are the Local History Photos of the week!

Photo 1: Corning Parade – Corning Offices Lincoln Rochester Trust Company Globe Float Side View In Front of Baron Steuben Hotel – Photo 1 of 2

Our first photo is of a neat float for a parade held in Corning some time in the 1930s or 1940s. The float, which clearly shows it is sponsored by the Lincoln Rochester Trust Company features a globe and a young gal in a white dress — perhaps the queen of the parade?

A great photo! If you know more about it than we do — let us know!

Photo 2: Corning Offices Lincoln Rochester Trust Company – Photo 2 of 2 

This second photo of the Corning Offices Lincoln Rochester Trust Company float shows the float driving up Market Street. You can clearly see on the right of the photo a sign for the “Corning Paper Supply” company and on the left for the “Taylor Printing Company” — very cool! As is the gaffer banner seen on the left side of the photo.

Photo 3: A Fun Bunch

We’ve no idea who the people are in this photo; but they do look like they’re having a good time!

I can’t see clearly what the man in front, on the left, is holding — a watermelon maybe? The fellow in front on the right seems to have a baseball bat and a humorous grin to match the twinkle in the eye of the maybe-holding-a-watermelon man opposite him. If you recognize anyone in the photo — let us know!

Our first photo is another photo taken of a photo! This one features the J. M. Grieg Dry Goods Store which I’m guessing what on Market Street in Corning some time in the past.

Photo 2 Postcard Steamboat at Penn Yan, NY

Our second photo of today shows a postcard of a steamboat coming into the dock in Penn Yan, NY.

Photo 3: Postcard Erie Railroad Station & St. James Hotel, Corning, NY

And our third photo is of a postcard of the Old Erie Railroad Station and Saint James Hotel that once graced the city of Corning.

Photo 3 is a photo of a postcard of the old Corning Glass Works — date unknown.

Hi everyone, here are the Local History Photos of the week!

Photo 1: Corning Baseball Team

Photo 1 is of a Corning baseball team. And the team might be a high school team from Corning Free Academy but what year the photo was taken and who the young players are remain a mystery…

Photo 2: The Masonic Lodge

Photo 2 is of the Masonic Lodge that still stands on Walnut Street. You can tell the photo was taken many years ago because the the Elks Club, which was built next door later, has obviously not yet been built — you can actually see the back porch of a house that faces First Street in the background on the right but the Elks Club building either was much smaller then than it is now or it wasn’t there at all…

Photo 3: Serious Notre Dame Baseball Player

I’ve no idea when there was a local Notre Dame baseball team — but there obviously was as here is a photo of a very serious baseball player. If  you know who the player is/was — let us know!

Hi everyone, here are the Local History Photos of the week!

Photo 1: A Local Overpass View

Photo 1 is a view of what was, or is, assumedly a local overpass. The cars appear to be from the 1930s but where the overpass was remains a mystery. If you know — let us know!

Photo 2: Cleaned & Painted Building

Our second photo of the week is of what might be an municipal building or, possibly, a church. Where in our region the building is, or was as the case may be remains a mystery.

Photo 3: Local Archaeological Dig

Our final photo for this week is of what appears to be an archaeological dig. But when and where the dig occurred, and what was determined about the remains – remain a mystery. The notation on the top left hand edge of the photo says ” July – 193″ – but whether that means the photo was taken in a July of the 1930s or if it was taken in July and is photo 193 in a series remains a mystery…

I’ve heard of Bostwick’s Department Store but I believe it was in existence before my time! If you have any stories about the store please feel free to share them!

Hi everyone, here are the Local History Photos of the week!

Photo 1: Corning Palomar Observatory Disc

This photo is obviously of one of the two large discs that Corning Glass made for the Palomar Mountain Observatory in 1948. However, whether it is the first imperfect disc that is on display at the Corning Museum of Glass or the second disc that wound up at the Palomar Observatory — is not clear from the photo. If you know, please let us know!

Photo 2: Dann Dairy 

I’ll admit that while the name “Dann Diary” seems familiar to me, I can’t quire recall where this dairy farm was located. But I bet someone out there in Internet Land will remember!

Photo 3: Corning Glass Trucks

Our third photo of the week shows some of the Corning Glass trucks parked in their garage spots. And as with the Dann Dairy photo I seem to recall seeing those trucks at some time in the past! I’m quite certain the building the trucks were housed in was on the Southside of Corning but where I’m not certain. However, I’m willing to bet that many local residents do remember where this building was located!
