Local History Photo 1: Painted Post (1901)

Our first photo was taken from the corner of Water and Hamilton Streets in 1901, and shows us a watery scene.

Local History Photo 2: Another View of Water & Hamilton Streets (1901)

Our second photo of the week shows offers another view of the flooding in Painted Post in 1901.

Local History Photo 3: Painted Post Street Scene (1896)

Our third photo for this week was taken a few years earlier than the first two, in 1896; and it offers a view from the corner of High & Hamilton St. in Painted Post looking eastward on High Street.

Local History Photo 1: Corning Glass Buildings (c. 19th Century)

Our first photo for this week is an old one showing an old Corning Glass complex, sometime in the 19th Century.

Local History Photo 2: Greetings From Corning Postcard Showing The Old Grieg Store (C. 19th Century)

Our second photo for this week is of a postcard showing the old Grieg store at some time in the past – what a cool look into Corning in the days of old!

Local History Photo 3: Clock Tower in Pine Street Square (c. 19th Century)

Our final photo for this week is one of my favorite photos from our Local History Photo Archive. The photo shows the clock tower in the old Pine Street Square, with Corning Glass factory buildings in the background, a horse and carriage stopped by the side of the street, a horse standing by the clock tower; and a very industrious and cleanliness minded woman sweeping the sidewalk – what a neat photo!

Old Newspaper Article of the Week

Our newspaper “articles” for this week are actually both ads.

However, they are both cool offering a neat look into what life was like in Corning in 1890!

The first ad is titled Smith & Sullivan Furniture Dealers and Undertakers; and what an eclectic business selling undertaking services and furniture!

The ad appeared on page two of the Corning Daily Democrat, Corning, N.Y. on September 9, 1890.

The second ad is titled At The Beginning Of The Fall Term Go To Comosh’s Book Store

This ad also appeared on page 2 of the Corning Daily Democrat on September 9, 1890; and I think it too is cool for offering a look into how students wrote in 1890 – with slates and slate pens!

For a wider look at life locally, in 1890, here is a photo all of:
