Local History Photo 1: Ingersoll-Rand Plant

Our first photo for this week is of a postcard showing the old Ingersoll-Rand Plant in Painted Post. The date the original photo was taken is unknown, but wow, what a cool photo – taken before the roads were paved and showing buildings which are long gone – very cool!

Our second photo for this week shows the old Brick, Terra Cotta & Tile Company building complex. Another cool photo offering us a window into life in our region in the past!

Local History Photo 1: Old School No. 3

Our first photo for this week shows a postcard of Old School 3, located on Chemung Street in Corning. The photo is one on the “photo of a photo” that we have in our local history photo archive; although this one is a photo of a postcard. The original photo was taken in 1915.

Local History Photo 2: Corning Schools, Corning, N.Y.

Our second photo for this week is also a photo of a postcard. The postcard show five old Corning schools: Northside Grammar School, Northside High School, Corning Free Academy (not the current building though!) and St. Mary’s School

Local History Photo 3: Parade

Our third photo shows a parade, with the paraders walking towards the old viaduct. The photo is undated but I would guess it was taken in the late 19th century.

Pushing Work On New Bridge

I think this article is cool because the writer is talking about what is today the walking bridge that one can take to walk past the Corning HQ complex and past Riverfront Park to reach the Northside, in 1921 they called it “The Pine Street Bridge.” How neat!

Our first photo for this week shows a baseball game played on September 4, 1896. The photographer is listed as “Drake” – so this is a Drake Family photo.

Our second photo for this week shows the Erie Railway Station in Painted Post in 1916.

Our final photo for this week shows a drawing of the Patterson Inn. Our records indicate that the drawing was done by “Wright” and I’m guessing the Wright in question might be the late artist, Jerry Wright.

Our first and second photos for this week show a baseball game played in Corning in the early 1900s. We don’t know the exact date the game was held – but we do know that the final score was Corning 5, Hornell 4.

Old Newspaper Article of the Week

I usually pick an old article of the week that falls on the same day as the release of our weekly local history blog posting. However, this week I went forward a few days as I couldn’t resist this front page article, from the Corning Daily Democrat for August 7, 1900; that talks about electric street lights being installed in the City of Corning. How cool is that?! Today electric street lights are ubiquitous – but what a huge change for Corning residents living in 1900 being able to go outside and clearly see down lighted city streets!

The article is, of course, titled $19,000 Saved The City By Democratic Issue! Contract For Street Lighting At $80 Per Lamp Per Year Signed In The Council Last Night (Wow, what a long title; but then it was a big deal!)

The microfilm for the reel of the Corning Democrat, for this portion of 1900 anyway wouldn’t full display in one digital photo, so here is a second page from the paper to give us an idea of the local and regional stories of the day;
