Hi everyone, here are the Local History Photos of the Week!
Helpful Viewing Tips are found at the end of the posting for anyone who would like a few tips on how best to view the photos*
–
Local History Photo 1:
Balloonist In City of Corning
This photo was taken by the Drake Family and shows a helium balloon being ready for takeoff circa 1900!
–
Local History Photo 2: Horse & Carriages
Our second photo for this week was also taken by a member of the Drake Family circa 1900 and shows two horses and carriages driving down an unpaved Corning street.
And I love the Dickensque top hat the driver of the carriage seen at the right side of the photo is wearing – how cool is that?!

Library Local History/Creation Station Resources:
At the library you can scan your photos and slides to create digital family albums and slideshows; and even use one of the Circut machines, and other Creation Station equipment, to help you create a special paper family history album.
Also of note, we have the local paper, at times called the Corning Leader, Corning Journal or Corning Daily Journal, on microfilm from 1840 to the present — so you can visit the library and research local history and your family tree if you wish!
And…
And if you find any old photos or postcards of the Corning area that you don’t know what to do with – you can always donate them to the library!
Very interesting to see Senior photos of Joe Littleton and Bob Shadduck.
Joe went on to become a leading light in Corning Research, and Bob Shadduck was a major force on WCLI in the 1950’s.
My mother, Helen Toby Hood (Werner) was a teacher at CFA during this time period.
It is indeed a SMALL WORLD!

I love those local stories!
Thanks for sharing.
I had fun creating this posting, not that I don’t always enjoy creating local history postings! However, this time around I was pleased to get to the photos of seniors whose last names start with L and see my very young great Uncle Robert Lawrence!

Thank you Linda!
It would be interesting to see the late 60s to early 70’s yearbooks to see when the long hair hippy look became acceptable in the Corning area.

Hi, I’ll work on that – did you have a specific year in mind or just the general time frame of sixties to early seventies?
