Local History Photos December 13, 2019

Hi everyone, here are the Local History Photos of the Week!

Helpful Photo Viewing Tips are found at the end of the posting for anyone who would like a few tips on how best to view the photos*

Local History Photo 1:  Coring Glass Works 1946

The record for this photo says “Looking S. from shipping platform between buildings #5 and #21”

I believe the photo was taken on the southside of Corning near where the new headquarters building is today. And obviously they were experiencing some major flooding in 1946s! If you know anything about the location of old Corning Glass Works buildings 5 and 21, let us know!

Local History Photo 2: Cars in Flood

A second photo, the same vintage as the first shows cars near Corning Glass Works buildings in 1946.

Year Book Snapshots:

Corning Free Academy Stator, December 1912

The December 1912 Stator features just one photo and here it is:

The photo is a bit crooked because the binding of the yearbook is a bit fragile. However, it is still super cool to see the 1912 CFA football team!

Have a great weekend!

Our second photo for this week is another photo of a photo in our collection. The original photo was obviously damaged but shows an unknown young local girl, perhaps in the 1930s. If you recognize the young girl, please let us know.

Local History Photo 1:

Balloonist In City of Corning

This photo was taken by the Drake Family and shows a helium balloon being ready for takeoff circa 1900!

Local History Photo 2: Horse & Carriages

Our second photo for this week was also taken by a member of the Drake Family circa 1900 and shows two horses and carriages driving down an unpaved Corning street.

And I love the Dickensque top hat the driver of the carriage seen at the right side of the photo is wearing – how cool is that?!

Hi everyone, as I’m running out of week and I’m going to the New York Library Association Conference next week – I’m going to do something different with our local history photos of the week – for the next two week period!

I’m going to post six photos and ask all our eagle eyed local history fans out there  in Internet Land – where they think the photos were taken!

I’ll post the answers with my next regular posting on Friday, November 22.

Hi everyone, here are the Local History Photos of the Week!

Helpful Viewing Tips are found at the end of the posting for anyone who would like a few tips on how best to view the photos*

As I mentioned in a previous blog posting, we’ve had a donation of several Addison Central School and Campbell Savona Spotlight yearbooks. And as we are not adding them to our collection, and I need to free up some space on my desk – I’m going to forgo putting up any local history photos this week and, instead, post photos from the 1965 & 1966 Campbell Savona Spotlight yearbooks and the 1991 & 1992 Addison yearbooks.

The yearbooks may be found in the spring 2020 Friends of the Library Book Sale – just FYI in case anyone out there is interested in looking at local yearbooks.

And on with the photos!
