Hi everyone, here are the Local History Photos of the week!

Photo 1: A Mohawk Plane


This “photo” appears to be of a newspaper and features a Mohawk plane that landed at the Corning-Elmira Regional Airport at some point the past.

Photo 2: Somber Young Women

Photo 2 features five somber looking young women dressed in some type of uniform. When/where the photo was taken and who the young women are remains a mystery.

Photo 3: Corning Parade

Photo 3 I recognize as being of a parade taking place in the City of Corning at some time in the past — with a neat Lincoln Rochester float in the foreground.

Hi everyone, here are the Local History Photos of the week!

Photo 1: Kids in Carriage

Our first photo for this week is one of a number of photos found in our local history archive that appears to be a picture taken of a picture. And I haven’t a clue as to what the number 54 refers to. It also remains a mystery who the children in the photo are and where the photo was taken. Nevertheless it is a neat photo showing a slice of life in days gone by.

Photo 2: Two Girls & Dog On Steps

Our second photo for the week features two young girls and a dog sitting on pretty fancy steps and entryway at an unknown local house. I you recognize the girls or the steps on the house please let us know. And dig those cool outfits – this photo, like the first one of the week, offers a view into what daily life was like in days gone by — at least if you lived in a fancy house!

Photo 3: Unknown Stone Work

Our third photo for the week features what appears to be some fancy stone work on the exterior of a building, or perhaps a statue or fountain? The record for the photo only notes that it was taken in Corning NY. So if you recognize where the photo was taken please let us know.

Hi everyone, as I’m now sharing multiple photos of our region in the olden days, I’ve changed the title of this series of postings to “Local History Photos.” And remember, if you have, or find, any photos of the people, places or events that occurred in the region in days past that you don’t know what to do with; you can donate them to the library and assist us in improving our Local History Photo Archive!

And now, on to the photos of the week!

Photo 1: Somber Officer

We have no idea who this somber officer is! I’m a librarian and not, of course, an expert in which military uniforms come from which era but I’m thinking, perhaps, he’s wearing a World War I era navy dress uniform? If you know who he is or what era his uniform comes from please let us know.

Photo 2: Mystery Man With Glass

Our second photo for this week actually consists of one photo and part of a second photo. And we’re going to ignore the part at the very right after the line and focus on the full photo which shows an unidentified man in what looks like a glass shop. I’m wondering if this might be a photo of the Corning Museum of Glass after the Flood of ’72? If you know where the photo was taken and/or who the mystery man is — let us know!

Photo  3: Moving One Of The Indian Statues In Painted Post

Our third photo of the week was obviously taken in Painted Post, and I’m guessing from the cars and the patriotic banners that they the men are installing the new Indian statue, the one that the late Norman Phelps designed, that was installed on Memorial Day 1950 — although the archival card for this photo doesn’t have a date.

In relation, Audrey Phelps, the wife of the the art teacher Norman Phelps who designed the new Indian statue, also known as the Indian Monument, wrote a neat article on the history of the Indian statues in Painted Post, for the Crooked Lake Review – which you can access via the following link: https://goo.gl/XM9QeB

The record for this photo indicates only that it is a train station located in Corning. If you know where the station was located, please let us know!

Photo 2: Masonic Lodge

 

Our second photo for this week is of the Masonic Lodge located on Walnut Street in Corning. What year the photo was taken remains a mystery…

Photo 3: Painted Post Square with Indian Monument 

Our final local history photo for the week features the old square in Painted Post with the Indian Monument right in the middle of the unpaved square. We don’t have an exact date for when the photo was taken – although I’ll venture a guess, based on on the horse drawn carts, that it was taken prior to World War II.
