Sticky Notes: A Thematic Book Club: Simply pick a book to read related to the monthly theme in some way, fiction or non-fiction, any genre, then come tell the group about it – what it was about, what you liked, or didn’t like. 3 D Printer Program: Bird Feeders: This program will include a brief 3 D Printer presentation and then attendees will select one of several 3 D bird feeder templates to create their own bird feeders.

Corning Area Writer’s Group: Inject some socialization into your solo writing time by join the library’s Adult Creative Writers Group for conversation, inspiration and feedback on writing projects. No sign up is required. This group meets every Thursday from 6-8 pm. On the third Thursday of the month the group meets in the library. On the other Thursdays the group meets at Soul Full Cup CoffeeHouse.

Local History Mystery Photos October 26, 2015

Here is another neat batch of Local History Mystery photos!

Note: You can always see a larger view of each photo by clicking on the photo.

Mystery Photo 1: The record for this photo states that it shows “Dr. Gordon with drum” and “Dr. O’Brien with flag;” and that the photo was taken in the early 1920s.

So our mystery questions are:

1. Does anyone know anything about how Dr. Gordon and Dr. O’Brien were?

2. Does anyone know what the occasion might have been that had these two doctors dressed up like Revolutionary Era soldiers?

3. Were was this photo taken?

Mystery Photo 2: Our second photo bears the description “Second Street c 1952.”

And our mystery question for this photo is:

What year did they first pave all the streets in the City of Corning?

Mystery Photo 3: The record for our third mystery photo is of Navy men 1915.

The record for the photo indicates the men are Edward W. Fitzpatrick & N. J. Allen.

And our two local history mystery questions for this photo are:

1. Does anyone know anything about who Edward Fitzpatrick and N. J. Allen were?

and

2. Where was this photo taken (for a bonus point as obviously it is hard to tell!)

Mystery Photo 4: Our fourth mystery photo is less of a mystery than the other three!

We can still stand on East First Street, about 50′ westward of the corner of First and Cedar,  and look eastward and see Christ Episcopal Church (foreground) and Corning First United Methodist Church (background).

So the light weight mystery questions this photo are:

1. What year was the photo taken?

and

2. When did that take down that metal (iron?) fence seen to the left of the Episcopal Church?

And don’t forget not only can you research your family history at the library – you can also create a family history album by using the equipment in our Makerspace — Creation Station!

We’ve got scanners to scan photos, a Cricut machine to design and create paper projects, a comb binder and even a laminator – check it out!

Here is another cool batch of Local History Mystery photos!

Photo 1: This photo is titled “Indian Monument Corner Hamilton and High Streets;” and it features what I believe is the original position of the Indian Monument in Painted Post. The photo was taken c. 1894-1895.

2. Does anyone know when the monument was moved from its original location?

3. Does anyone know who the two men are sitting at the base of the monument?

Photo 2: We’re on a roll with Painted Post photos this week! Photo 2 has the subject listing of “Corner of High and Hamilton Street. Looking East on High Street.” This photo too is noted as being taken in Painted Post and the year listed in 1896.

Photo 4: Photo 4 has a brief records which says it is titled “Lumber Camp” with the added notation that the photo was taken in Steuben County and c. 1900.

3. Does anyone know where the photo was taken?

And for a bonus question — what does anyone know about the history of the lumber industry in this area?

Intermediate iPad Workshop: Our Intermediate iPad Workshop takes attendees on a tour of some of the more advanced features of the iPad. We will go over Siri settings, keyboard layout options, renaming your iPad, enabling & using Bluetooth devices, how to make phone calls from your iPad, how to use AirPlay (in conjunction with an Apple TV box) to stream music and videos from your iPad to your TV and more.

Time: 10 – 11:30 a.m.

The Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale Is This Week! The Fall Book Sale is going on this week at the East Corning Fire Hall located at 11873 E. Corning Road in Corning, NY.

To get there take Denison Parkway, passing Dunkin Donuts and getting onto 352. Follow the signs posted by the Friends. The fire hall is a couple minutes down the road on the left.

Book Sale hours are:

Monday Oct. 5 -Thursday Oct. 8 | 9 a.m.-7 p.m.

Friday Oct. 9 | 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Saturday Oct. 10 | 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

It simply says that the photo is of “Ice Skating” and it was donated to the library by “CPPHS.” I believe “CPPHS stands for the Corning Painted Post Historical Society. And the mystery questions for this photo are our favorite trio of questions!      A. Where was this double photo taken? B. When were the double images in the photo taken? and C. Who are the people seen in the photos.
