Holiday Closings: The library will be closed on December 24, December 25 and January 1. We will also be closing at 2:00 p. m. December 31. We will be open our regular hours on the other days including being open our regular Saturday hours of 10:00 a. m. to 4:00 p. m. on Saturday, December 26 & Saturday, January 2.

New hours, and expanded, Creation Station hours will begin January 4, 2016.

Creation Station is our makerspace in the library. Come in and make something incredible. Makerspace projects that will be available to be created at the Southeast Steuben County Library include:
• 3 D Printer created projects*
• Computer created projects
• Sewing projects*
• Scanning projects (slides, photos & documents)
• Art projects*
• Scrapbooking projects*
• Drawing

All Patrons interested in using the Creation Station will be required to receive training before using the space. Projects that require training are only accessible upon staff availability. *Some projects will require a small fee for materials. Programs are made possible by the Friends of the Library.

Inject some socialization into your solo writing time by join the library’s Adult Creative Writers Group for conversation, inspiration and feedback on writing projects. No sign up is required. Hi everyone, here is a new batch of Local History Mystery Photos!

As usual if you click on the individual photos you get a larger view.

Local History Mystery Photo 1:

Well this one really isn’t a mystery! Unless of course, someone wants to take a stab at identifying the man in the photo… This is a photo of the McDonalds that use to be in Riverside somewhere near the old Tasty Freeze. I’m thinking it was located somewhere near where the entrance ramp to the highway is across from Auto Zone but as I was 6 in 1972 I might be off a bit! The picture was taken just after the famous Flood of 1972.

Local History Mystery Photo 2:

This photo was taken during the Food of 1972 and the mystery might be how was it taken? It appears the photographer was in a boat floating by the Glass Works buildings. And this photo also appears to be a photo taken of another photo — so the second mystery question might be who has the original photo?

Local History Mystery Photo 3: 

This photo appears to be of the Chemung River looking eastward from the region that is past Wegmans and parallel  to Sunset Drive — towards what I believe is the Bridge Street Bridge in the background with parts of the old railway bridge in the foreground.

Local History Mystery Photo 4: 

This is another photo in the library archive that appears to be a photo of another photo so it is a bit crooked because that is the way the photo in the archive looks; however, this is a neat photo of the Corning of the past! The photo is of one of those old postcards and is labeled with the description “Junction of Pulteney and Bridge Streets, Corning, N.Y.

And I know where Bridge and Pulteney Streets are of course! However, that large building in the foreground — not a clue!

So our mystery questions regarding this photo are 1: Does anyone know anything about the large building in the foreground – perhaps what business were housed in it? And 2. Does anyone have any idea of what year the photo was taken?

Local History Mystery Photo 5: 

And this one is another photo in the archive that is actually a photo of a photo; however, I think it is cool so I’m going to include it! This one is of the St. Mary’s Church what I assume if formally called the Rectory located on Corning’s Southside. And our mystery question is what year was this photo taken? The car, which you can just see located in the bottom right hand corner of the pictures looks like an early 20th Century car — so if someone knows their cars — they might venture a solid guess!

This photo is of old School 3, located on Chemung Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets in Corning and which has since been transformed from a school into apartments. And our local history mystery question is what year do you think the photo was taken?

And our final Local History Mystery Photo for this month is of another parade. The paraders look like a formal group don’t they? So our local history mystery questions for this photo are 1. When was this photo taken and 2. Where was this photo taken? The description in the archive only says “Parade, Corning.”

Our iPad Basics Workshop offers new iPad owners an overview of how to use the iPad; and includes a discussion of useful suggested apps in categories that iPad owners might enjoy. The iPad app categories discussed include: News, Entertainment, Sports, Cooking, Games, Books, Weather and more!

3D Printer Program: Holiday Ornaments:
6:00 PM – 7:30 PM Dec 15, 2015
This program will include a brief 3 D Printer presentation and then attendees will create their own customized 3 D Printed ornaments.

Note: Since 3 D Printing takes a while ornaments will have to be picked up at a later date.

Quarterly Crafting: Crafts for Christmas

Hi everyone, here is a new quartet of Local History Mystery Photos!

Local History Mystery Photo 1:

This photo is of a boy reading what appears to be a newspaper sometime in the past in the Corning area. Our archival information is scant for this photo is simply is listed as being donated by the Corning Painted Post Historical Society and that the date of the photo is c. 1900

So our mystery questions are: A. Where was this photo taken?, B. Who is the little boy in the photo? And what type of even was going on that day — a parade perhaps?

This photo shows five young women apparently graduating from a local school c. 1900 — which school they graduated from remains a mystery!

Mystery question 1 for this photo is just that! A. Does anyone know which school these young women attended? and mystery question 2 is: Does anyone recognize any of the women in the photo?

Our third mystery photo is of a parade! And our mystery questions are:

A. Does anyone know anything about the parade (i.e. when it was held and for what occasion).

B. Where was the parade held? (Does that look like an unpaved a pre-railroad and highway Denison Parkway in Corning?

Local History Mystery 4:

Our final Local History Mystery Photo for this week has a one word listing in our archival record — it simply says “Biplane.”

Our mystery questions for this photo then are:

A. Where and when was this photo taken?

B. Does anyone know anything about the plane, or this type of plane?

C. Does anyone recognize any of the men in the photo?

And remember you too can scan your photos and slides and make a digital family history album, that can be shared on line with family and friends, at the library!

And if you prefer a print family album we can help you with that too! Creation Station, the SSCL Makerspace, features a color printer as well as a Cricut machine so you can make a really fancy paper family history album if you want to!

Available Throughout The Week: One-On-One Personal Technology Appointments:You can make an appointment with a member of the Library’s Digital Literacy Services staff as an individual or for 2-4 people to learn how to use a new computer, Mac, e-reader, tablet, smartphone, email, The Internet or a variety of software including the Microsoft Office Suite & Skype at a variety of times throughout each month.

This is a free service the library offers!
